Then the Yankees sweep down the Shenandoah Valley, burning everything. When they leave, she watches her people being led away, tied to the wagons hauling away all her food. Defying the officer in charge has left the house standing and her and the children unharmed. Desperately, she heads to the fields to gather any food the army missed, determined to keep them safe and fed until Charles returns home. Weeks later when Charles returns, he has been so damaged by the war, she wonders how she can tend to him, the children and the plantation. Winter is on his heels, and the terrible war continues. All she has is her faith and love, and both are being tested. When the Yankees return to take over their house, it is a stronger Charles who reminds her, God has a plan. This is one of the best books I have read in a very long time. It is set in the South towards the end of the Civil War. It is filled with strong women who endured as much or more then their husbands who were fighting. The wives left behind had to fight their own battles with trying to keep their homes standing and their children fed . They also were extremely vulnerable to the Union. The Union soldiers thought nothing of taking any belongings, food or what little money the women may have had, and destroying whatever was left Including raping the women who they considered traitors. It is a very powerful book and I was drawn into this book from the very beginning all the way through to the end. I couldn't put it down. I will read it many more times through the years, it is that good.Product details

The women of this story are what I have always thought they would have to be to have survived and prospered, strong in faith and family. Thank you
This is a great fiction civil war story of families that were made to depend on each other due to circumstances. Color, education, rank in the military, social status etc. all went out the window when the need was called for, for everyone to pull their resources together. It does have a strong christian base to it. It was just a very good read and I am anxious for the next book in this series to release.
How nice to find books that are hard to put down. This is one of them. Very good! And makes you appreciate all the comforts we take for granted.
I gave this book 5 stars because of the story. The heroine, Joanna, must overcome many trials as her life progresses through the winding down of the Civil War. As with a lot of current writers and editors, I have trouble dealing with incorrect grammar, such as the use of then instead of than in certain situations. All said, I did enjoy the read.
I really enjoyed this book because I love history. Looking at day to day life in the confederate south through Joanna's eyes was fun. She's a likeable character who is very resilient and capable!
This is one of the best books I have ever read about life during the Civil War. This is not a flowery romance that glosses over the hard struggle of survival during this period of history. The destruction of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley was devastating. Joanna is a woman living there trying to keep herself and children alive while waiting and hoping her husband comes from the war. Joanna of Virginia seems very well researched and historically accurate.
I'm excited to read the coming stories of wives in the States involved in the Civil War. I don't have a lot of leisure reading time and this book kept me up long after I should have put it down. Definitely recommend reading it.
For people like myself who don't read religious and spiritual type books, don't be afraid of M. Biery's books. Just like a touch of honey sweetens your tea, just like a touch of love sweetens your life, so too does a " touch" of looking to a higher Being touches the life of the Civil War people.
My favorite type of story is American Fictional History. This was breathtakingly wonderful. Suited me to a tea with a touch of honey.
If you haven't read The Widow Mouse, try that one and a bunch of others too.
